France: At least 120 children of French nationals who joined terrorist groups abroad have reportedly been detained in Syria, with the French government planning to review their fate on a case-by-case basis.
“Adults have been to a war zone and will have to respond to what they are accused of, crimes they may have committed ,” said Agnès von der Mühll, director of communications at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The children have not asked for anything, so we have to look at their case with the best interests of the child in mind. “
“The fate of these children will be decided on a case by case basis,” says Sophie Neumayer, journalist at France 3.
“With regard to children, the principle was their return: to say today what we will do on a case-by-case basis is simply to say that, as a matter of principle, they will not go back,” says Martin Pradel, a lawyer specializing in the defense of French jihadists, it “is a real evolution and it is very worrying.”
